Pre-emergent herbicides stop seeds from germinating by suppressing a key enzyme. In the US herbicides are most often used for preventing crabgrass from growing in lawns.

They should be applied to lawns either in the Spring or Fall to stop weed seeds from beginning to grow. The beauty of these herbicides is that they don’t have any effect on established grass.

Apply in the Spring when temperatures reach 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit for 4 consecutive days. Apply in the Fall when nighttime low temperatures reach 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit for 4 consecutive nights.

Product Review

Prodiamine 65 WDG Barricade Pre-Emergent Herbicide (a generic Barricade) is an excellent product for controlling weeds, especially when it is used as a broadleaf (any plant that has full flat weeds) and grass weed killer.

It can be applied in both Autumn and Spring to provide season-long broadleaf and crabgrass weed control. It is also especially useful for controlling Annual Bluegrass without staining.

Prodiamine 65 WDG (Wettable Dispersible Granule) mixes well in the tank with both iron solutions and fertilizers. It has low volatility and solubility and stays within the area of possible weed germination.

This product has 1/4 as much active ingredient Prodiamine as other leading pre-emergent herbicides. Besides crabgrass, it is effective in controlling 31 other weeds, including knotweed, henbit, prostate spurge, chickweed (common and mousear), foxtail (annual), annual bluegrass, goosegrass, barnyardgrass, crowfootgrass, cup grass, itchgrass, junglerice, johnsongrass (seedling),kochia, common lambsquarters, lovegrass, pigweed, browntop, Texas, and Fall panicum, common purslane, rescuegrass, Florida Pusley, signalgrass broadleaf, shepherdspurse, Persian speedwell, sprangletop, yellow woodsorrel (from seed), and witchgrass.

It is also successful in keeping weeds from growing in St. Augustine, Centipede, Bermudagrass, Bahiagrass, Seashore Paspalum, Kikuyugrass, Zoysiagrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Buffalograss, Creeping Bentgrass, Perennial Ryegrass, and tall and fine Fescue grasses.

This product may be used on established turfgrasses (except putting greens on golf courses), sod and lawn nurseries, landscape and container ornamentals, wildflower plantings, established perennials, and Christmas tree farms.

Apply this product with a pull behind sprayer. If Prodiamine 65 is applied in Springtime, some people recommend not reseeding until Fall. Other users say that reseeding is possible with either a minimum of two weeks or heavy rain.

A low dose of this product requires mixing 1 tablespoon with water adequate for 1,000 square feet. Two tablespoons for 1,000 square feet is a relatively high dose. After application, the yard will turn brown for approximately 2 weeks. After a rain, the lush greenness of your yard will return.

This product is most potent when applied on soil that is clod-free, weed-free, and debris-free (no mulch or leaves). This product won’t harm most shrubs, trees, flowers, and vines.

Species that are tolerant to over-the-top application of this product include all Fir species, Norway and Japanese maples, Barberrys, Japanese Boxwood, Weeping Bottlebrush, Wild Lilac, False Cypress, Scotch Heather, Citrus species, American and Flowering Dogwood, Pampas Grass, Border and Greenstem Forsythia, English Ivy, Rose of Sharon, American, Chinese, and Japanese Holly, Walnut, Oleander, Sourwood, Avocado, and Magnolia species.
