How To Apply Milky Spore Granules To Your Lawn

Nasty, Disguisting, Gross….I don’t know about you, but that’s how I feel about grubs.

There are many annoying critters that can find their way into your yard and wreak havoc.

Some of these pests include grubs.

I think most of us have dug in our yard and come across those nasty little white, wiggly, grubs that look like they could bite your fingers off. Actually, those big, gross, white grubs are technically called the Japanese beetle grubs.

Yeah, those little buggers are what we are talking about.

If you’re not sure if you have a grub problem, one of the easiest ways to tell, other than just digging into your yard, is if you suddenly have a raccoon and skunk problem.

The skunks and raccoons are typically responsible if you come out one morning and your lawn is a total wreck. They love grubs, so they go a little dig-crazy to find those scrumptious little grubs. You may also be able to tell if your otherwise healthy, green lawn suddenly turns brown.

You may start to notice signs of a grub problem after a few weeks of consistent rain or if you overwater your lawn because the moisture creates an ideal environment for grubs and their eggs to thrive. So, if you are experiencing this type of weather or starting to see the signs that you have grubs, you will want to start looking into grub control.

Depending on how severe the damage, you may only need to apply grub control. For the purpose of this article, we will assume that you only need to apply a control product because you’ve caught the problem early enough.

There are many grub control options on the market, and Milky Spore Granules is one of them.

What are Milky Spore Granules?

Though plenty of products help manage grubs, many are chalked full of chemicals that are hard on the environment and your plants. Milky Spore is a natural, organic insecticide that directly targets the Japanese Beetle Grub.

If you didn’t know, those nasty little white grubs you see squirming their way through your yard are just the larval form of the Japanese beetle. This ugly little white grub is what Milky Spore Granules target. When the Japanese beetle is in this stage of life, it is susceptible to the deadly effects of Milky Spores.

The great thing about Milky Spores is that they are economical, safe and easy to use, 100% organic, contains no harsh chemicals, and work for years.

How does it work?

For Milky Spore Granules to work, they need to be ingested. One of the convenient aspects of this product is that it does not activate until it comes into contact with its prey. This is part of what makes this product so effective, and it doesn’t go to waste or wash away if it’s not being used, it simply waits.

After being applied, the granules will stay dormant until a grub comes along and ingests a grain. Once the product has gotten into the grub’s body, it begins to multiply and subsequently kills the grub. When the grub dies, its body will decompose, and the milky spores that grew within the grub will reenter the soil and go to work all over again.

Because of this entry and reentry process Milky Spore Granules go through, this product can be effective for up to 10 years.

When and how do you apply Milky Spore Granules?

When to apply Milky Spore Granules depends a bit on if you have a grub problem to begin with. Once you have identified that you have a grub problem, you will want to apply this product.

For Milky Spores to be optimally effective, you will want to apply 3 times a year for two years. For these two years, it’s suggested that you apply the granules once in the spring, summer, and fall for a total of six applications over the two years.

After you have been consistent with an application for two full years, your yard should be grub-free for 10 years. Some sites and users say that this product can last up to 20 years, but this seems to be in extreme cases.

Because this product only continues to work if grubs continue to ingest and die from it, if your product last for 20 years, you likely have a major infestation that the granules are continually fighting for those 10-20 years.

To apply these granules, you will want to use a drop spreader and evenly apply the product across your entire lawn.

Because this product is safe for children and pets, you don’t have to spend much time worrying about keeping your loved ones out of the treated area. Also, because this product is organic and safe for the environment, you won’t have to worry about where you’re applying it.

The main thing you will need to focus on when you spread Milky Spore Granules is that you’re getting a solid covering on your lawn. Grubs are more resilient than people think, so don’t make the mistake of missing a large area in your yard or you may end up with a concentrated infestation.

Here’s a video that demonstrates how to apply Milky Spore Granules.

Even though Milky Spore Granules are very useful in fighting off Japanese Beetle Grubs, it is ineffective in combating any other pests. However, it is effective in other species if it comes in contact with their larval form; otherwise, it stays ineffective.

So, as great as this product is, if you have a more varied infestation, you will have to look into getting another pesticide to fight off the other nuisances in your yard.
