Did your John Deere tractor stop suddenly, and you can’t for the life of you figure out what went wrong? Well, the good news is it might not be your fault, but to know for sure, you will have to check the factory fault codes.

In some cases, a quick cool-down or visual diagnostic will be all you need to figure out why your John Deere has stopped running. Other times you may need to check the system fault codes to see where the problem is and what you can do about it. 

When it comes to checking fault codes, you will need to be ready with resources, or else you will not get the help you desire. Unlike signal lights, the fault codes are a single letter followed by 6 to 9 numbers. If you write this code down and then come to an article like this one, you will be able to tell exactly what is wrong with your machine and how to fix it.

How to Check Fault Codes on John Deere Equipment

If you suspect an issue with your machine, you can check the system fault codes. To do this, you will press the “menu” bottom on the control panel down for 5 secs until you see “code” flash across the screens. Press “select” and write down any codes you see come across the screen. Keep pressing “select” on the console to scroll through the codes until you reach “end”. 

Once you reach the end of the displayed codes, you can clear them so that when you run the test later, you will see what errors have been fixed. To clear the codes, press “end” and then “select” until you see “wait”.

Once you see “wait”, hold the “select” button down for 5 seconds until you see “end”.

Once “end” is displayed, the diagnostics will be cleared and ready for another test. 

Fault Codes You Can Fix on Your Own

There are some fault codes that reveal issues you can fix on your own. These issues usually have to do with faulty sensors, overheating, temperature issues, or turns and hill readings. Once a mower is leveled out and everything is cooled down and checked over, a second diagnostic often yields no issues.

Other issues like tire pressure or fuel warnings can usually be resolved when the right part is tuned up. Electrical shorts may also lead to a reading that implies worse damage to your tractor than is really there. Make sure all connections at junctions are tight to prevent these false fault code readings.

Fault Codes That Need Professional Repairs

There are also many system codes that, if you see them, mean a trip to a repair shop is in order. Whether you can pick up and replace a faulty or whether an entire overhaul is needed depends on the specific code that comes up. If you do need an expensive repair, make sure that you have tried everything to get the reading to clear.

Often fixing or replacing a part that clears up an error code may result in fixing a fault code in a more critical element of the tractor. If repairs are needed, make use to use authorized parts and technicians to ensure you get the best service you can.
